Abstract

Studies on the structure of calcium ionophore, A23187, using IR, UV, CD, fluorescence and NMR methods indicated that this ionophore forms a dimer in nonpolar solvents such as chloroform. When incorporated into a phospholipid vesicle, the spectra showed remarkable time dependent changes indicating further aggregation of the dimer into a stacked dimeric structure in dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine vesicle. Results point to the possibility of A23187 transporting divalent cations across membranes by a pore rather than by a diffusive carrier model.
