Abstract

Strontium tetraborate, $SrO^.2B_20_3$ (SBO), is a relatively new non-linear optical (NLO) crystal of the borate series with unique characteristics including a transparency range extending into the vacuum ultraviolet (UV) region [1]. The glass-forming ability and network structure of SBO glasses have been discussed by Akasaka et al. [2]. To the best of our knowledge, no systematic studies on the glassy characteristics of SBO have been reported in the literature. In order to visualize the importance of SBO glasses containing micro/nanocrystallites of well-known NLO materials for possible device applications [3, 4], we thought it worth characterizing these glasses for various physical properties. In this letter we report the results of X-ray diffraction (XRD), electron diffraction and differential thermal analysis (DTA) studies carried out on as-quenched samples, along with the dielectric and optical characteristics. Also, the results of second harmonic generation (SHG) studies carried out on glass samples heated beyond the crystallization temperature are reported.
