The economic well being of a country and the quality of life of its people depends on the quality of its skilled and technical manpower. Planning technical education in India should take into consideration the lack of resources, non-availability of quality training manpower, an industry based on imported technologies and products, all pervasive bureaucracy, social aspirations, etc. In this paper all related factors that lead to the present situation in technical education in the country are explored and a few suggestions that are implementable are given.
