Abstract

Captivation inception studies were conducted on an axisymmetric headform with a hemispherical nose. The test body with a diameter of 48.3 mm was mounted in the 381 mm axisymmetric test section of the Indian Institute of Science High-Speed water tunnel facility. The Reynolds number range covered by the tests was from 4.8 X 10 to the power of 5 to 8.6 x 10 to the power of 5. Within this [Reynolds Number] range good agreement was found between the present observations and those made previously on a similar test body at the California Institute of Technology at the Pennsylvania State University Water tunnel facilities.
