Abstract

This paper demonstrates an analysis method to predict the residual strength and stiffness of a cracked composite plate with different lay-up sequences. Considering the advantage of the small thickness of the plate and shell, It is very useful to analyze them as dimensionally-reducible structures. Variational Asymptotic Method (VAM) is used to derive 2D constitutive law for plate analysis. All the desired 3D fields (displacement, strain and stress) have been calculated for a healthy and cracked composite plate by VAM and compared with finite element analysis using commercial software. The results exemplify that VAM is a very powerful tool, which is simultaneously efficient and accurate compared to 3D FEA, Hence it helps to reduce the analysis time substantially. It will help the designer in the preliminary estimation of the residual strength and stiffness of the damaged component. © 2023, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc, AIAA.
