Abstract
Autorotative descent is a special type of winged seed (samara) dispersal method used by nature, for instance in Maple and Mahogany trees. The leading-edge vortex dominates the local flow surrounding the samara, whereas the root tip vortex, wing root vortex, and wing tip vortex are present in its wake. One of the input parameters for analytical modeling and understanding the performance of the samara is the induced velocity due to the wing tip vortex. The wake of a single-winged spinning samara is investigated using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) in a seeded glass chamber to capture its wingtip vortex. The obtained velocity and vorticity field showed the presence of a helical wingtip vortex in its wake. The velocity field for samara shows it works on windmill brake state from the concepts of momentum theory. © 2023, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc, AIAA. All rights reserved.
