Abstract

A new dynamic priority based queueing scheme with a common queue for both handover and new call requests in a mobile microcellular system is presented. The queue is dynamically reordered depending on the radio power levels received by mobiles from the base stations, and the waiting time of new calls. The performance evaluation for the new scheme is carried out by computer simulation of call traffic in one cell of a microcellular system. The simulation results have shown that the new scheme improves the service quality of a microcellular system by reducing call blocking probability and increasing the carried-to-offered traffic ratio. The new scheme provides a means of adaptively controlling the grade of service of a mobile microcellular system by changing the prioritization constant for new call requests depending on the traffic pattern.
