Abstract

A flexural type Mach-Zehnder fibre-optic hydrophone is fabricated and tested. A single mode optical fibre of 3·6 m in each arm, 1300 nm laser diode, photodiode and processing circuits constitute the sensor. A feedback stabilization scheme which compensates for phase drift introduced due to laser frequency jitter and environmental disturbances is described. This has a stress voltage coefficient of 26·5 π rad $V^{-1}m^-1$. The sensor shows a flat response up to 4000 Hz and a resonance peak at 6000 Hz. Its sensitivity is 3·5 rad Pascal $^{-1}$ in the flat region and 270 rad Pascal $^{-1}$ at the resonance frequency. The response of the present sensor compares favourably with that of a standard Bruel and Kjaer Type 8103 PZT hydrophone (7 refs.)
