Abstract

In Drosophila melanogasterboth sex determination and dosage com~ensation are goyemed by the ratio of the number of X chromosomes to sets of autosomes. We propose a mechanism by which this ratio can be measured at the ce1\ularlevel. The mechanism helps in ur.derstanding the effects of, and interactions among, mutants affectmg the rrocesses of sex determination and dosage compensation.
