Abstract

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), with their unique advantages of mobility, are promising network elements having the potential to enhance performance in next-generation mobile cellular networks. In this paper, we explore UAV-assisted communication with hybrid PHY layers. We address the main limitation of UAVs, namely, the limited available onboard energy, by proposing an optimal adaptive UAV relay gain policy that maximizes a weighted sum of the average spectral efficiency and energy efficiency. We compare the proposed policy to a fixed gain policy and observe nearly 50 gain in both spectral and energy efficiency. © 2023 IEEE.
