Abstract

This chapter focuses on aqueous, crosslinked polymer-based microgel particles that provide immense promise for drug delivery and bioimaging. It summarizes significant achievements in synthesizing microgels with tunable size, swelling degree, chemical functionality, and properties. It also provides the readers with an overview of the stimuli sensitivity of microgels, which helps in controlling the degradability and release of bioactive components for drug delivery applications. Furthermore, it discusses the potential of multifunctional microgels for cell bioimaging. The recent advancements reviewed here encourage us to develop advanced microgels that can intelligently function in the targeted biological environment. © 2024 selection and editorial matter, Anuj Kumar, Durgalakshmi Dhinasekaran, Irina Savina, Sung Soo Han.
