Nanocomposites in a variety of metallurgical systems can be synthesized by controlling the process parameters. The approach is based on the manipulation of the nucleation and growth behaviours of competing phases through the phyical metallurgical understanding of phase formation in these systems. The effect of small amounts of alloying addition in chemical tuning of the microstructure has been explored. A number of examples from our work covering both intermetallic nanocomposites and nanocomposites with soft dispersoids are presented. © 1996 by OPA (Overseas Publishers Association).
