Abstract

Shock wave and boundary layer interactions (SWBLI) are known to generate very high levels of unsteady pressure fluctuations which can trigger transonic buffet over the payload region of a launch vehicle. Experiments were carried out on a typical launch vehicle model in the NAL 0.6m trisonic wind tunnel to measure the pressure fluctuations over the payload region. It was found that a passive Aerodisc protruding upstream of the nose of the vehicle very significantly alleviates the pressure fluctuations, especially in the low-frequency band, which is crucial for launch vehicles. The effectiveness of the Aerodisc in the alleviation of SWBLI is demonstrated in this paper through analyses of unsteady pressure data.
