Abstract

The line current zero-crossing distortion is one of the key challenges associated with any Power Factor Correction (PFC) converter topology. In this paper, a rigorous comparison of popular current control strategies (PI and PI-RES) and their impact on line current distortion near AC voltage zero-crossing for an isolated active clamp boost PFC converter is presented. It is shown that a PI-RES based current control strategy is ideally suited to improve the shape of the current waveform near zero-crossing thereby reducing the total harmonic distortion (THD) while simultaneously achieving improved disturbance rejection. Hardware results from a 1 kW laboratory prototype are presented to validate the effectiveness of the current control strategies in mitigating the current zero-crossing distortion under ideal and non-ideal grid conditions.
