Abstract

Bearings are the critical components in rotating machines to support the rotating parts. An electromagnetic bearing (EMB) supports the rotors of machines through controlled magnetic forces. Due to their non-contact and lubrication-free operation, EMBs are becoming an attractive solution for high-speed and clean applications. These EMBs are inherently unstable systems and require closed-loop control for stabilization. The unstable pole constrains the achievable control specifications such as gain margin, phase margin and bandwidth. The controller design that ensures stability margins as required is critical. This paper reviews the simplified modelling of the EMB system, P and PD controllers design and their drawbacks in stabilizing the EMB. The relation between the stability margins and the unstable pole is analyzed using Bode's gain-phase relation. A systematic PID controller design procedure that ensures the required stability margins is presented. The simulation results comparing P, PD, and PID controllers are presented. Further, the performance of the PID controller is validated on a nonlinear model. Although the controller is designed for the linear model, the simulation results agree with the requirements. © 2022 IEEE.
