Abstract
AI alloys containing up to 2.8% lithium are being developed as a lighter substitute for currently used high-strength A1 alloys. The higher strength-to- weight ratio and higher elastic modulus of the new A1-Li alloys have led to their application in the aircraft industries. Each 1% addition of lithium to an A1 alloy decreases the density by about 3% and increases the elastic modulus (stiffness) by 6% [1]. In practice up to 4 wt % Li can be added. The direct benefit of A1-Li alloys includes a potential 25% increase in specific strength and specific stiffncss with a consequent overall weight reduction of aircraft.
