Abstract

Due to insufficient literature on the performance of insulators for HVDC, multi-stress accelerated ageing study on composite insulators is envisaged, wherein the degradation mechanisms, long-term performance of insulators under HVDC experimental investigations are conducted. With the available literature and standards for ac stress, in the present experimental investigation a unique multi-stress facility for conducting studies on HVDC insulators is established. The multi-stress facility integrates all the stresses like fog, rain, UV, humidity, temperature along with electric field to study the degradation of HVDC composite insulators under accelerated ageing conditions. Some experimental investigations with electric stress, high temperature along with UV in the presence of moderate humidity are studied for a period of 500 h. The important results obtained are analyzed and presented. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2020.
