Abstract

This paper proposes a simple torque controller for SRM, consisting of a single PI controller and phase-shifted gating functions for the individual phases. In order to select the PI parameters, a large-signal model for the SRM is first derived from its static torque characteristics, different small-signal linearized models are studied, and the most appropriate one for controller design is identified. The designed controller is validated through simulations and experiments on a 4-kW, 8/6-pole, 4-phase SRM drive. The impact of four different gating functions on the torque ripple and RMS phase current are investigated through experiments. An online feed-forward compensation using sensed phase currents and estimated torque is proposed to enhance the torque controller performance at higher speeds. The controller performance with and without feed-forward term is presented for the proposed gating functions at different operating speeds and torque levels. © 2022 IEEE.
