Abstract
This paper deals with the stochastic modelling of one of the plants of a fertilizer complex encountering severe interruptions, resulting in loss of production. The plant consisted of three parallel streams of coal gasification units with various configurations of waste heat recovery boiler systems at different time points. The state of these three parallel streams in combination was modelled as a Markov process. The ideal configuration of the system for optimal operational productivity was derived using this Markov model. Experimental analysis through a Markov simulation approach has given excellent insight into possible system performance with an additional parallel facility, without incurring any actual investment.
