Abstract

The overwhelming performance of microwave irradiations techniques is employed to synthesize conducting polymers (CPs). This application field is a new challenge worldwide and is facing a lot of issues related to its acceptance in science and engineering fraternity. Surprisingly, only a few reported articles are available regarding the accessibility of microwave protocols depicting the preparation methods for CPs. Recently, it has received spotlights in the field of green and sustainable chemistry and gained paramount importance. This facile new technology focuses on improving the present globe by imparting enough solutions to the existing drawbacks associated with conventional heating. To facilitate, the synthesis of CPs under closed vessels, microwave reactors is foremost and easily accessible. Hence, it helps in paving the way to an environmentally benign reaction atmosphere. Advantageously, CPs are considered as “green polymers” hence are a prominent part of sustainable-based polymer family. During the chemical reactions, performed under controlled conditions, they eliminate the use of hazardous reagents and results in low emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). We further highlight the benefits of microwave reactors for large-scale production of chemicals and fine-tuning of specific parameters leads to improvement in yields of the reaction and enhanced in the kinetic rates as reported. The process facilitates a significant time reduction in rates of a reaction from a few hours to days to a few minutes. The microwave synthesized CPs have a broad range of applications and exhibit promising properties mainly in the field biomedical such as “biosensors, tissue engineering, imaging,” aerospace fields specifically in composite units and stealth applications, as well as play a predominant role in stimuli-responsive and biomimetic materials. This chapter focuses on a broad overview of the microwave-assisted synthesis of CPs and highlights some facts and prolog in the emerging field of interdisciplinary materials science.
