Abstract
A combined method of contamination evaluation indices, multivariate statistical analysis, and geochemical modeling was applied to estimate the intensity and source of contamination in a confined aquifer of Samrak Park in the Nakdong River Basin, Korea. The mean concentrations of metals in the groundwater are, in the descending order, Sr2 2 2 = .96). Multivariate statistical analysis and contamination indices revealed that the quality of water was mainly affected by natural/geogenic processes with anthropogenic activities being a minor source. Geochemical modeling of PHREEQC showed that hematite (Fe2O3), goethite (FeO(OH)), gibbsite (Al(OH)3), rhodochrosite (MnCO3), and siderite (FeCO3) were oversaturated, and that alunite (KAl3(SO4)2(OH)6), hausmannite (Mn2O4), manganite (MnO(OH)), melanterite (FeSO4·H2O), pyrochroite (Mn(OH)2), and pyrolusite (MnO2) were undersaturated. The high contents of Fe and Mn in groundwater resulted from the weathering of silicate minerals in the host granitic rocks, and the geochemical processes of heavy metal species were mainly related with natural dissolution and precipitation.
