Abstract

The paper examines the response of square horizontal anchor plate in frictional soil using three-dimensional analysis. The present numerical model is found to closely predict the experimental uplift pressure–displacement relationship. The ultimate uplift load of anchor plate is found to be significantly influenced by its embedment depth, anchor plate size and properties of the fill sand. Elastic modulus of sand has significant effect on the initial slope of the pressure–displacement responses. However, the elastic modulus has marginal effect on the ultimate capacity of anchor plate. The performance of anchor plate is found to increase by 1.8 times with increase in dilation angle of sand from ψ = 0 to ψ = ϕ in dense sand. The scale effect on the performance of anchor plate is found to be marginal for anchor size in the range of 0.5 m × 0.5 m to 1 m × 1 m. The results obtained from the present numerical investigation agree well with the results reported in literature for similar cases.
