Abstract

Respiratory rate is known to be a vital sign which needs to be dynamically monitored for acutely ill patients in a clinical environment. Analysis of the respiratory pattern aids in diagnosis of localized disorders in the respiratory system and also to assess the treatment provided to cure the same. In the present study, a non-invasive, wearable, Fiber Bragg Grating Respiratory Measurement Device (FBGRMD) is proposed which comprises the ability to acquire the respiratory pattern employing the nasal airflow. The force imparted by the nasal air flow is transduced into strain variations over a cantilever which is acquired by the FBG sensor bonded over it. FBGRMD employs two FBG sensors to capture the respiratory cycle from both the nostrils of the subject. Individual phases of respiratory pattern can be identified which further aids in order to assess the condition of the respiratory system.
