Abstract

The coordination environment of aluminium in $Al_20 As_x Te_{80-x}$glasses has been probed by solid state magic angle spinning (MAS) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Differential scanning calorimetry and x-ray diffraction are used to study the thermal crystallisation behaviour. It is found that in $Al_20 As_x Te_{80-x}$glasses, Al is both tetrahedrally and octahedrally coordinated with arsenic or tellurium. Based on these studies it is proposed that the local structure in $Al_20 As_x Te_{80-x}$ glasses is characterised by As-Te, $[Al-Te(As)]_6$ and $[Al-Te(As)]_4$ structural units. The compositional dependence of the above structural species is found to determine the structural order in these glasses.
