Abstract
The devastating earthquake that struck the temple town of Uttarkashi at the midnight of September 1, 1803, is the largest historically documented from the central Himalaya. It caused massive damage and loss of life in parts of central Himalaya as well as some locations in the Indo-Gangetic (Ganga) Plains. The IMD’s (India Meteorological Department) database on Indian earthquakes places this event in the central Himalaya, with some uncertainty.
