Abstract
Rogowski coil plays an important role in the measurement of lightning impulse currents both in tall towers and high voltage circuits. In many applications, the operational requirements could force the coil to its upper frequency limit. Coil's response under such a condition is not that well known. In this work, performance of Differentiating Rogowski Coil with external integrator (DRC) and Self-Integrating Rogowski Coil (SIR) is studied for frequencies extending beyond the so called upper frequency limit of the coil. In order to perform rigorous analysis, novel governing equations for voltage and current in frequency domain under both uniform as well as non-uniform excitation are deduced. Elegant analytical solutions are given for the case wherein the source conductor is a long cylinder. Distributed circuit model is also adopted and validated with analytical solution. It is shown from both frequency domain and time domain analysis that self-integrating type Rogowski coils are very sensitive to asymmetry in geometry/position of the source conductor and also to external current paths in close proximity.
