Abstract

Photocatalysis is gaining significant interest as an efficient process for several applications, such as hydrogen and oxygen production, degradation of toxic chemicals, CO2 reduction to produce hydrocarbons, and bacterial disinfection. The properties of photocatalysts are affected by several factors and modification in photocatalysts through anion doping is one of the potential methods to tune their chemical and physical properties. These anions generally include N, S, C, O, F, and Cl, where these elements have been doped in many typical photocatalysts, such as TiO2, ZnO, g-C3N4, SrTiO3, WS2, and WO3. As a result, it has been observed that the anion doping considerably enhances various properties of photocatalysts, including exciton recombination, transfer of charge carriers, optical properties, and surface properties. In this context, this chapter highlights the importance and mechanism of anion doping and discusses the progress in the development of anion-doped photocatalysts for their diverse photocatalytic applications.
