Abstract

This chapter primarily focuses on discussing the basic concepts of a sandwich composite panel. This chapter begins by defining a sandwich composite panel and describing the constituent parts of a sandwich panel. After that, a brief history of the development of composite structures over the year is given to provide a consolidated overview of the increasing need and applications of sandwich panels. Followed by this, the different materials used in sandwich composite structures, such as the different types of face sheet materials, core materials and adhesive materials, are discussed in detail. Subsequently, a detailed exposition of the various fabrication techniques used for realizing sandwich composite structures is shared. The discussions include the basic understanding of the process, the critical process parameters, and the advantages and limitations of each process. Both traditional and modern fabrication techniques are discussed to provide a foundational grasp on the fundamentals of sandwich composite panel structures.
