Abstract
Unlike the proverbial elephant in the room, we do not ignore the fly because it is a well-known but uncomfortable truth. People usually ignore the fly because they do not appreciate its myriad mysteries. To change this is the challenge and the joy of science writing. Vincent Dethier did this best in his 1962 classic, To Know A Fly, in a mere 124 pages with wisdom, wry humour and artful prose.
