Abstract

Switched reluctance machine (SRM) could also be used as a generator. At high speeds, only single pulse operation of the generator is possible where turn-on switching angle and turn-off switching angle are the only control parameter. First, all the feasible pairs of switching angles are determined for the given generator at a given DC bus voltage and speed through repeated simulation runs. Then, an off-line optimization procedure is used to obtain the optimal pair of switching angle for the desired output power. Two optimal techniques are reported in this paper. Optimal technique-1 minimizes the phase rms current while delivering the commanded output power. Optimal technique-2 minimizes the dc bus rms current while delivering the desired output power. A 4 kW, 1500 rpm, 8/6 pole, 4-phase SRM drive is used to verify the proposed optimal techniques. The experimental and simulated phase current and dc bus current are also shown at a few of the optimal points. © 2021 IEEE.
