Abstract

The efficiency of the dual active bridge (DAB) based converter is a strong function of loss in the series inductor. The optimal design of the series inductor requires accurate estimation of magnetic loss to achieve high efficiency and power density. Unlike PWM DC-DC converters, here the inductor experiences high-frequency flux reversal and hence higher core loss. This paper presents a comparative study of total magnetic loss in a high-frequency AC inductor, estimated using analytical, simulation and experimental approaches. First, the inductor is designed for DAB based DC-DC converter using the area product method. Then the magnetic loss is estimated for a triangular current wave shape using three different approaches for a range of operating voltage and frequencies. The estimated loss obtained through different approaches is compared. © 2021 IEEE.
