Abstract
A dwelling, while providing shelter, reflects the identity and individuality of its occupant(s). Traditional architectureevolved with time, catering to the needs of theinhabitants, adopting local materials and in harmonywith the prevalent climate and environment. Growingaspirations and global pressures drive transitions inthis traditional fabric, pushing towards modern constructionpractices. For traditional societies in Asiaand Africa with a large rural population, transitionshave serious local and global impact, including loss oftraditions, increased material and energy demand,and contribution towards climate change. This articlereviews transition in dwellings in rural settlementsand makes an effort to comprehend its nature, driversand consequences.
