Reinforced concrete beams show increased ductility and reserve deflection capacity when the compression concrete is confined in circular spiral steel binders. In an investigation to study the influence of such confinement, eighteen reinforced concrete beams were tested in flexure and the deflections noted at all stages of loading. The load-deflection diagrams of the beams indicate that at working loads, boams with and without confinement have the same deflections while near the ultimate, the confined beams show considerable plastic behavior. The deflections of all the beams have boon computed by ACI 318-71 method and found to agree satisfactorily with the experimental deflections in the working ranges. A method for computing the ultimate deflections of beams is presented and the computed load-deflection plots are compared with the test results. For all the beams tested the plastio hinge> rotations have boon computed and the effect of confinement on the same examined. © 1974 American Concrete Institute. All rights reserved.
