Lateral loads such as seismic and wind loads act upon high-rise structures in their life span. Therefore, it is crucial to adopt an efficient lateral load resisting system which can withstand such unpredictive lateral loads in high-rise structures. In this paper, various systems which resist lateral loads in high-rise structures have been studied when they are subjected to seismic loads. Diagonal strut with masonry infill system, outrigger system and diagrid system are considered as lateral load resisting system in the present study. The efficacy of three lateral load resisting systems which are considered has been assessed based on the maximum storey displacements taking place laterally in the high-rise structures. Seismic analysis of each high-rise structures is performed by response spectrum method of analysis as per IS 1893(Part 1):2016. The results obtained by the analysis show that the structure adopted with the diagonal strut with masonry infill system has lesser storey displacements in this comparative study. From the observation of results by the analysis, it is found that the outrigger system in the high-rise structure shows higher storey displacements when compared to the other two structures considered in this study. The diagrid system which have been adopted in the structure shows storey displacements larger than the diagonal strut with masonry infill system but lesser than the structure with outrigger system. Hence, the high-rise structure adopted with diagonal strut with masonry infill system shows more resistance toward lateral displacements when compared to the other two considered systems and is effective. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.
