Abstract

The Ten Commandments of Successful Research on Wasps - and All Other Types of Research An Indian biologist teaches and pursues his research in Bangalore but is also present much of the time at the Wissenschaftskolleg in his capacity as a "Permanent Fellow" What is the secret behind good research? That would seem to be the million-dollar question of science policy, even if large sums of money have already been spent in trying to answer it. But we will see here that the answer has nothing at all to do with such sums. We will see an example that lends itself to deriving certain commandments for becoming a good researcher. And the first of these reads: Thou shalt not believe that good research is based on good science policy. The example of the Indian biologist Raghavendra Gadagkar shows that good re search comes from good researchers and local intelligence. Institutes, faculties, universities and clusters are not the key to good research but university chairs and those seated in them - even if Gadagkar has shown, in the Wissenschaftskolleg's 2001 yearbook, that scholars of the humanities mostly sit while natural scientists more often stand (Gadagkar 2001: 72 f.). Gadagkar himself is a settled creature. He received his Bachelors degree, his Masters and his PhD in Bangalore - and he teaches in Bangalore. And now we come to the second commandment to be derived from this intellectual biography: Thou shalt not worship the idols of mobility and what one tells you about an international career.
