Abstract

We report a device for collection and dry storage of sputum samples for downstream molecular diagnosis of tuberculosis. A specimen transportation device (SPECTRA-tube) was developed that can spread a large specimen volume (>1ml) over a paper membrane and dry the specimen rapidly within an enclosed device. The dried sample can be entirely recovered by rehydration and centrifugation, obviating the need for punching. The device consists of a funnel for sputum addition, a paper-and-plastic cassette that holds the sputum, and desiccant packs for drying, all packaged inside a 50-ml Corning tube. SPECTRA-tube is the first device of its kind for sputum dry-storage. © 2019 CBMS-0001.
