Abstract

This paper proposes an approach to emulate the behaviour of different IEEE excitation system models or industry provided excitation system models using a micro-alternator in the laboratory. An IGBT based buck converter is used as an exciter for the alternator. A time constant regulator is used, to emulate the field time constants of large machines using microalternator. In this paper DC1A, AC4A and ST1C excitation systems are used as reference excitation systems whose terminal characteristics need to be emulated. The trajectory of the field voltage of the reference model is tracked by the buck converter based exciter using a PID controller. The proposed emulation approach is tested under various small and large disturbances in MATLAB/SIMULINK environment. © 2020 IEEE.
