Abstract
The problem of MAV guidance for aerial rendezvous is considered. A three point guidance methodology based on the beam rider concept is proposed. Beam rider guidance positions the follower MAV along the beam directed from a ground based tracking system towards the leader. Analytic guarantee for a resulting rendezvous is derived from the line- of-sight guidance principles. The proposed scheme is validated using extensive 2 D and 3 D simulations. The robustness of the methodology is studied against autopilot delays. The work presents a simple and robust guidance philosophy for assisted aerial rendezvous overcoming payload and size constraints for smaller MAVs. © 2016, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc, AIAA.
