Abstract
Realistic resin flow simulations in vacuum infusion composite manufacturing processes require accurate fabric permeability inputs. Various experimental techniques, analytical models, and numerical procedures have been developed to determine permeability of different fabric architectures belonging to single scale and dual scale fabrics. In this work pertaining to single scale fabrics, a semi-analytical model of permeability along the fiber direction is proposed for a single unidirectional (UD) fabric ply and lay-up of multiple UD plies using experimentally estimated fiber direction tow permeability data. The novelty of the permeability model is that it takes into account contributions from fiber tows, inter-tow gaps, and inter-ply gaps explicitly. Tow permeability in fiber direction is determined experimentally by performing unidirectional flow experiments along the fiber direction at different fiber volume fractions. The experimentally determined tow permeability value shows a reasonable match with Gebart permeability model. Predicted fabric permeability in fiber direction is compared with the experimental and simulation results showing a reasonable agreement. © 2020 Elsevier Ltd
