Abstract

One of the main challenges faced in the operation of microgrid is the protection coordination due to the presence of different types of distributed energy sources. This paper addresses the issues such as delayed operation of protective relay in the absence of main grid which in turn will affect the relay coordination in microgrid. Majority of the problems can be solved with the help of Master controller (MC) having communication facility with various relays installed in the system. The work carried out proposes an algorithm to find out various relay setting parameters such as Time Multiplier Setting (TMS), Pick up current Ipickup and the suitable operating characteristics curve for the over current relay during both islanded mode and grid connected mode based on formulation of Z-Bus matrix. The computer program to find out the elements of Z-Bus matrix is also explained with the help of relevant formulae. The relay coordination for both radial and ring type configuration of the microgrid has been studied and results are presented. © 2019 IEEE.
