Abstract
A quality assessment study was carried out in fifty engineering institutions in India viz thirty five institutions that were less than 10 years old (Type-1) and fifteen institutions that were more than 10 years old (Type-2). On comparing Type-1 institutions with Type-2 institutions, it was evident that Type-2 institutions scored significantly high er scores in criteria’s that included Mission, goals and organization, Financial resources and Utilization, Physical resources, Human resources, Teaching- learning processes, Resear ch & Development and Industry- Institute interaction. The assessment also revealed that the institutions need to put into place good quality practices for their sustained growth and there is a need for implementation of Total Quality Management (TQM) practices to improve the quality of engineering education in India
