The effect of various inorganic and organic additives on various time-resolved processes (e.g. degradation, ignition, burning rate and quenching) in the combustion of polystyrene has been examined. They are found to impart favourable as well as unfavourable effects on various combustion steps, the important implication being the selection of fire-retardant additives for the specific hazards encountered in end use.
