Abstract

When sulphur is dissolved in piperidine, it gives an intense red solution containing polysulphides. This solution undergoes oxidation by the atmospheric oxygen to form a precipitate which contains piperidine thiosulphate and a small amount of piperidine sulphite and sulphate. The thiosulphate can also be prepared by bubbling oxygen through the polysulphide solution. The thiosulphate, sulphite and sulphate thus formed in the solid phase have been analysed. The products of reaction present in the liquid phase are identified to be the monothiopiperidine and a small amount of piperidine sulphate. A mechanism of reaction is proposed to explain the oxidation.
