Abstract

The role of applied DC potentials on mineral dissolution and growth of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans is illustrated with respect to possible mechanisms and applications in the bioleaching of complex multisulphides. Electrochemical principles governing mineral dissolution under electrobioleaching conditions are brought out. Electrobioleaching is shown to be advantageous with respect to selectivity in dissolution and enhanced yields of biomass. Applications in the treatment of multisulphide concentrates containing lead-zinc-copper are outlined with examples.
