Abstract
The effect of cationic substitution on a spin Peierls (SP) transition in CuGeO3 single crystals is studied by susceptibility measurements. In-chain and off-chain doping were carried out by substituting cobalt in the copper site and gallium in the germanium site respectively. SP transition is found to be very sensitive to nature and concentration of dopant. Increasing gallium concentration induces a systematic reduction in transition temperature (TSP) whereas magnetic impurity cobalt causes its drastic reduction. 1 at% cobalt is sufficient to suppress SP transition completely Influence of magnetic impurity with high spin value disrupting the spin-1/2 chain is discussed
