Based on continuum damage mechanics (CDM), the paper presents a non-linear finite element formulation for a Timoshenko beam. A layered approach has been adopted to simulate the progressive growth of damage and plasticity from extreme fibers towards the neutral axis. An isotropic continuum damage 1-D model has been derived for damage evolution for material like Al 2024-T3. Coupling damage with J(2) based plasticity, a coupled constitutive relation has been developed within the framework of the internal variable theory of thermodynamics. Incremental finite element analysis has been done on beams to predict the failure load based on the CDM criterion and the same has been verified based on the Sih's strain energy density criterion
