Abstract
The announcement of the successful completion of the human genome project by two groups – the Human Genome consortium and Celera Genomics, on 26 June 2000 marks a watershed in modern day biological research. Within 24 hours of its announcement, parallels have already been drawn between this extraordinary achievement and man’s landing on the moon and the invention of the wheel. Basic and applied research in human medicine and welfare are never going to the same again. Although cynicism and criticism about the usefulness of the finished sequence and the methods adopted abound, there remains no doubt that the knowledge of the complete genetic template of Homosapiens will be a major step forward in the study of human biology.
