Abstract

The three-dimensional symmetric turbulent near-wake behind a swept flat plate with sharp trailing edge, has been investigated at low speeds. Both leading and trailing edges of the plate were swept at 45degrees. Model spanned the entire width of the test section of the wind tunnel. Measurements were carried out at a Reynolds number of 1.4 x 10(6), based on the uniform freestream velocity and chord of the swept plate. Detailed measurements of mean velocity and turbulence quantities in the near-wake are presented. Distributions of mean velocity and turbulence quantities have been measured using a 3-hole and hot-wire probes. It is shown that, in the nearwake, the upstream wall layer coordinates are relevant to describe the magnitude of the mean velocity vector. The centerline values of magnitude of mean velocity vector varies logarithmically with streamwise distance, in the near-wake, for large streamwise distance. The results are discussed in the light of existing concepts and theories for three-dimensional turbulent boundary-layer. (C) 2004 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
