Abstract
The high-pressure Raman and infrared spectra of hafnium tungstate (HfW2O8) are measured up to 24 GPa at room temperature. The changes under pressure of the stretching and bending modes of the WO4 tetrahedra. as well as lattice modes have been studied. An estimate of the thermal-expansion coefficient has been made based upon the mode Gruneisen parameters and found to be in reasonable agreement with the measured value. The high-pressure spectra indicate that the alpha-gamma phase transition occurs at 0.6-0.9 GPa. in agreement with previous work. Around 2 GPa. HfW2O8 undergoes an irreversible transition from the gamma phase to an amorphous structure.
