Abstract

An impact parameter representation for soft gluon radiation has been developed to obtain both the initial decrease in pp as well as the subsequent rise of the total cross-section $({\sigma}_{tot})$ for pp and $\bar{p}$. The rapid rise from the perturbative jets is tamed into the experimentally observed mild increase by soft gluon emission. Here we focus on the role played by confinement, in particular the need for a singular ${\alpha}_{s}$ in the infra red region.
